Í FRÉTTUM ER ÞETTA HELST (BREAKING NEWS) premiered at Reykjavík’s City Theatre on the 2nd of February, 2023. In the performance, four friends investigate the framework and performative qualities of televised news; aesthetics, form, methods and setting.
Created as a part of the theatre’s UMBÚÐALAUST program, members of the theatre troupe BEIN ÚTSENDING collaborated with the City Theatre, resulting in a one hour performance on the 3rd floor of the theatre.
News broadcasts have a place in the hearts of Icelanders. The aesthetics reflect the zeitgeist of each time, and it is impossible to find a truer mirror of the present time than the latest news. News is truth, and the transmission of it is the truest performance, since it is not a game or a lie, but an impartial sharing of information. Or what?
What's behind the camera?
Why does the anchor talk like tha?
Why are all news written the same?
The performing arts group BEIN ÚTSENDING makes sense of the blurred boundaries between truth and performance by investigating the performative qualities of news reporting; aesthetics, form, methods and setting. The group's results is presented as a live news broadcast live on stage.
BREAKING NEWS is part of the City Theatre's Umbúðalaust project, where the goal is to strengthen grassroots work in the Icelandic performing arts scene and strengthen the relationship between new artists of the stage and the audience.
